Why Is Mattress Protection Important?
Mattress protection is imperative to the life of your mattress, and more importantly, it provides a healthy sleep environment by guarding against bed bugs, dust mites, allergens, sweat, urine, and stains. It is nearly impossible to wash a mattress, using a removable mattress protector offers the ability to easily wash and maintain your clean sleeping environment. Mattress covers come in different sizes, styles, materials, fabrics, and with varying protection benefits.
Types Of Mattress Protectors
There are two main types of mattress protectors, with each providing distinct benefits and protection:
Zippered Mattress Encasements - Six (6) Sided Protection
A zippered mattress encasement encloses the entire mattress, offering complete protection. Zippered mattress encasements are ideal for shielding against bed bugs, dust mites, dander, allergens and other contaminants.
Fitted Sheet Style Protection - Five (5) Sided Protection
A fitted sheet-style mattress protector is designed to be placed over a mattress, similar to a fitted sheet. It slides over the edges, corners, and sides of the mattress, and uses elastic to ensure a snug fit. It can also be used for protection against normal wear and tear. While they may offer top or side surface protection against bed bug bites and dust mite allergens, they are less effective then encasements because the bottom of the mattress is not covered.
Fabric Type and Construction
Woven vs Knit
The basic difference between woven and knit fabrics is in the use of the yarn or thread that composes them. Knit fabrics are made up of a single yarn, looped continuously to produce a braided look. Woven fabrics are comprised of multiple yarns interlaced at right angles to form the woven fabric.
Woven fabrics have been scientifically constructed to achieve a specific pore size.
Cotton
Cotton is naturally hypoallergenic and is available without chemical and pesticide treatments, making it ideal for those with skin sensitivities. It is highly breathable to allow mattresses to stay cooler for a good nights and better days. Cotton is highly durable, making it a great choice for a long lasting cover.
Polyester
Polyester is a synthetic fiber. It is less expensive than cotton and other natural fabrics. It has strong fibers that are flexible and resistant to wrinkles and shrinking. Polyester is less absorptive also, making it a great choice for the hospitality market, where frequent washes and water temperature are a concern.
Vinyl
Vinyl fabric is extremely resistant to wear and tear. Vinyl is easy to clean, waterproof and is resistant to stains. Vinyl does not get scratched or damaged easily and is even flame-resistant.
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is a non-woven synthetic material. It is inherently resistant to mold and mildew, as well as being moth proof. Polypropylene is also an anti static material.
Polyester TriCot
Polyester Tricot is a warp-knit fabric. It is made with a close-knit design, with the fibers running lengthwise, while employing an interlaced yarn pattern. Polyester tricot is a soft, low cost, durable fabric. Great for high wear and tear environments.
Waterproof Materials
Polyurethane
Polyurethane is an ultra-thin, flexible, breathable barrier used to waterproof fabrics and effectively stop the transmission of liquids, dust, bed bugs and dust mite allergens; remaining undetectable and silent during use. It creates a waterproof barrier, while not affecting breathability. A polyurethane barrier has microscopic pores that allow air to pass through the mattress cover, keeping the sleeper cool throughout the night. Polyurethane is a durable material that’s quieter and cooler to sleep on in comparison to vinyl.
Vinyl
Vinyl mattress encasements are not nearly as breathable as polyurethane nor those made without a laminate barrier but are effective against pests and liquids. Vinyl’s thickness provides an effective barrier against bed bug bites and dust mite allergens. However, vinyl retains heat, which makes for a warmer bed throughout the night. Bargoose vinyl has been constructed with a soft silk taffeta finish to diminish the crinkling noise frequently associated with this type of protector.
Mattress Pads vs Mattress Encasements
Mattress Pads
A mattress pad is a layered, quilted material that sits on top of your mattress, but below your sheets. A mattress pad can help to protect your mattress to some degree from general wear and tear, and help reduce allergens. Bargoose mattress pads are waterproof, designed to capture an adult void while sleeping, ensuring that the mattress stays dry and protected. They are available in fitted or anchor band styles. We recommend using a mattress pad on top of the encasement, directly beneath the bottom sheet.
Mattress Encasements, Mattress Covers, Mattress Protectors
Known by many names, mattress encasements are designed to block bed bugs, sweat, fluids, and/or dust mite allergens. Mattress covers are available in fitted and zippered styles and designed to lay directly on top of the mattress, below the mattress pad and sheets.
